Interesting highlights in and around Dresden
We have compiled a variety of current and interesting highlights for the guests of our holiday apartments and guest rooms. This will help you to get the most out of your visit to the royal capital of Dresden.
Art & Culture: March, 2010 saw the opening of the "Türckischen Cammer" (Türkische Cammer) at the Dresden castle; the Historical Neumarkt (Historischer Neumarkt) project surrounding the Church of our Lady (Dresdner Frauenkirche) is making great strides; starting 20th June, 2010, the "New Masters" (Neue Meister) are again on display at the renovated Albertinum (Albertinum); the Hygiene Museum (Hygienemuseum) features not only fascinating special exhibits, but also has an interesting permanent exhibition; the Semperoper (Semperoper) offers a select program of operas and special events.
Music, Festivals & Markets: the International Dixieland Festival (Internationales Dixieland Festival) takes place every May; also in May the Karl-May-Festtage (Karl-May-Festtage) invite visitors to Radebeul; the summertime Elbhangfest (Elbhangfest) is celebrated every June – and extends from the Körnerplatz in Loschwitz to the castle of Pillnitz; the Picture Nights on the banks of the Elbe (Filmnächte am Elbufer) attract crowds every summer from July to September with cinema shows, live shows and numerous concerts... and at the end of the year the traditional Striezelmarkt (Striezelmarkt) will again be held from late November until 24th December. Also, a special and wonderful atmosphere can be experienced at both the Advent Market at the Neumarkt (Adventsmarkt auf dem Neumarkt) and the Medieval Christmas in the Stable Court (Mittelalter-Weihnacht im Stallhof).
Castles & Vicinity: the three castles on the Elbe hillside (drei Schlösser am Elbhang) are always worth a visit. In May, 2010, we were delighted to see the addition of another special gastronomic experience: the Restaurant Lingner Castle (Restaurant im Lingner Schloss) opened its doors. From the castle’s terrace you are presented with a beautiful view of Florence on the Elbe (Elbflorenz) – just as in times gone by, it still manages to fascinate people from around the world. If you look to the left you will see the cliffs of Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) in the distance, a unique cliff landscape lining both banks of the Elbe. Stay looking in the same direction and you can admire the newly renovated Palm House in the Pillnitz Castle Park (Palmenhaus im Pillnitzer Schlosspark). Following the Elbe in the other direction, you will find the city of "White Gold" – Meissen, famous for its porcelain. From the Albrechtsburg Albrechtsburg (Albrechtsburg) , next to the Gothic cathedral of Meissen (Dom in Meissen), you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Elbe and the vineyards of the Proschwitz Castle (Schloss Proschwitz).
